Reception and Key Stage One

Ruby’s Worry 9781408892152 £6.99
by Tom Percival
Ruby loves being Ruby and is always perfectly happy until, one day, she discovers a worry. At first it’s not such a big worry, and that’s all right, but then it starts to grow. It gets bigger and bigger every day and it makes Ruby
sad. How can Ruby get rid of it and feel like herself again? A reassuring and sensitive book which provides the perfect springboard for talking to children about sharing their hidden worries.

The Boy and the Bear 9781788000765 £6.99
by Tracey Corderoy illustrated by Sarah Massini
When a lonely little boy receives an invitation to play written on a paper boat, it seems that he has found the best friend he’s been longing for – at last. But Bear isn’t quite the playmate the boy had imagined. If only he knew how to play games properly! But when Bear starts to build a treehouse, the boy is intrigued and a magical summer begins. As autumn passes and the first winter snowflakes start to fall, the boy is left alone, and only then does he truly realise what he has lost. Then at last spring comes again and the friends are joyfully reunited with a very special hug!

I Want to Go First 9780192749741 £6.99
By Richard Byrne
In this playful and engaging new story, Elphie is lining up with the other elephants to start the long march to the watering hole at the back of the book.  As the littlest elephant, he has to go last. But Elphie REALLY wants to go first and he enlists the help of the reader to move him up the queue. He almost manages it until the biggest elephant shuffles everyone back to their proper positions just as they arrive at the watering hole. But the watering hole is already occupied by a very, very big and very, very selfish elephant. Elphie’s resourcefulness saves the day. Children’s sense of fair play will be rewarded in this great story to read aloud.

I have read ‘I Want to Go First’ with my son (who all too often wants to go first!).  It is a fantastic book!  Mr Lee

Key Stage 2

Rory Branagan Detective 9780008265830 £6.99
by Andrew Clover and illustrated by Ralph Lazar
“Hello. I am Rory Branagan. I am ACTUALLY a detective. People always say, ‘How do you become a detective?’ I say, Ahhhh you don’t just FIND YOURSELF suddenly sneaking up on baddies, or diving out of the way as they shoot, or hurtling from an open plane towards the ground! You have to WANT it. And what made ME want it? I needed to find out what happened to my dad.” This is the first in a series in which we meet Rory and his accomplice, Cassidy, as they investigate the poisoning of Rory’s next-door neighbour. Rory’s adventures are all highly illustrated so you can see everything he gets up to in glorious black and white. A good next step for fans
of Tom Gates. (Upper KS2)

by Alex T Smith
It has been weeks since Mr Penguin’s last adventure and he’s been stuck at his desk, twiddling his flippers ever since. That is until the phone rings! Mr Penguin and Colin, the bowler hatted spider and Mr Penguin’s silent right hand
man, are called in to find the missing treasure somewhere in the Museum of Extraordinary Objects. The quest finds them solving secret codes, fighting ferocious beasts, eating fish finger sandwiches and travelling deep below the
museum to a lost jungle. Indiana Jones meets Hercule Poirot in this new series with plenty of slapstick humour, mystery and adventure. (Lower KS2)

The Secret of the Night Train 9781407184401 £6.99

In a whirling world of jewel smugglers, thieves and undercover detectives, can she catch the diamond thief before they reach their destination? Agatha Christie meets Eva Ibbotson. (Whole KS2)
