End of year celebration 2017
End of year celebration letter 2017
Dear parents and carers,
It is a tradition to celebrate some of the achievements of the last school year at St Peter’s. As usual, it’s been jam-packed full of fun and exciting learning for everyone.
Growing together, in mind body and spirit
The staff at the school have been working very hard to improve their subject knowledge, and understand the best methods to help children learn. This has resulted in more children reaching the expected standard for their age.
Outside of the core subjects, we have continued to provide a curriculum embedded in our locality, with as many playful experiences as possible. Once again, the children have been on an incredible number of trips, and have had some wonderful visitors into school. We’ve seen pirates, vikings and space domes! We’ve had dressing up days, science days and the odd treat here and there. Year 6 and Year 4 have also been on very fun residentials to London and Escot respectively.
The school continues to grow in popularity, which is important in these financially difficult times. We now have 18 children on our waiting list (and growing!) plus a thriving nursery that is also oversubscribed.
The arts side of the school has seen some lovely Christmas performances. The year 6s also put on a brilliant musical concert last week. Our music groups continue to perform at different venues, including the care homes in Budleigh. There has been a huge growth in the number of children learning instruments, and we have also seen the creation of a new big band- Budleigh Brass led by Mr Gould. The children have also been expressing themselves in art, with paintings and ceramics. We have some nice new artwork to show off in the hall.
On the sports side of the school, participation rates in clubs and festivals remains very high. We have also had a lot of regional success as well, representing East Devon in many competitions. We retained our Aquathon title for the third year running, and our cycling title for the second. It is also lovely to see how many awards the children are winning outside of school and showing off in our Friday assemblies. Our Sports days seem to get better each year too. There was a lovely mix of inclusion and competition this year.
Our fantastic PTA provided two of the highlights of the year. Firstly, the very popular new play equipment was funded and installed this term. It is swarmed over every playtime! Secondly, the Christmas and Summer fayres go from strength to strength. We are very lucky to have such a committed PTA – thank you!
We are three years into our journey now. It is fair to say it has been hard work, but we are quickly becoming a very good school. I feel very proud to offer a school that has a fantastic and dedicated staff team. You won’t know just how much training they’ve absorbed! Congratulations to our newest members, including Mr Murray who has successfully passed his first year of teaching with us. We also have great premises, including our wonderful swimming pool. We are very lucky to have some specialist teachers and teaching assistants that make a real impact with the children. There aren’t many schools that can offer an Emotional Well-being or Dyslexia teacher. The children also have more access to sports and music than most schools I know. We are so well supported by our community in Budleigh and our PTA.
We really are a privileged school.
All of these things were recognised in our recent inspection. We have a successful curriculum, very good feedback from staff, parents and pupils, a blossoming new leadership team and have engaged very well with our community.
We now have to rigorously pursue higher expectations and see our standards continue to rise in every area. It is an exciting time to be at the school, as we continue on our journey to become a ‘great’ school.
Awards and thank you
Congratulations to everyone who has won an award this year. We wanted to reward everyone, so all the children have been given a special treat this afternoon to say well done for all their hard work.
Well done to Mrs Broad. She was awarded a ‘Specialist Leader of Education’ distinction this year, in recognition of all her expertise and knowledge of the Early Years.
A massive thank you to all the parents and carers that support their children with the endless tide of reading, spellings, maths and other school work. We appreciate the support you give to the school, particularly in this very trying time where we are expected to do more with less resources. We also want to add a thank you to all of our volunteers and highly skilled parents who have offered their expertise and given up their own time to enhance and support children’s learning; ranging from Spanish lessons in Willow and Nursery to a Careers Fayre in KS2.
Have a lovely Summer break and we’ll see you all back in September (except for year 6: good luck at Secondary school!)
